Drinking was just a symptom of a larger disease. We had to understand its causes and conditions.

I was willing to believe that A.A. was telling me the truth. I wanted to believe it was true in a way I cannot relate in words.

False Self – The addicted or codependent self.

Many of the people around me wanted me to go to treatment, but I resisted. I didn’t want the kids at school to know what was going on. If I went to treatment, they’d all know within a week.

If you are as seriously alcoholic as we were, we believe there is no middle-of-the-road solution.

At this point I surrendered. I admitted I was an alcoholic without a clue what to do about it.

I wasn’t an alcoholic. I had other problems that needed attention; then I would be okay.
