Who is it that is to investigate ātman? For whom is this investigation necessary? Is it for ātman? No, since ātman is the ever-attained, ever-pure, ever-free and ever-blissful whole, it will not do any investigation, nor does it need to! All right, then it is only ego that needs to do the investigation.

Ajahn Chah said,

ego comes into existence, everything comes into existence; if ego does not exist, everything does not exist. Ego itself is everything. Therefore, know that investigating what this [namely ego] is alone is giving up everything’.

So do not accept this ego, the truth of which you have not yet found out by scrutiny; deny it by giving no importance to its existence, root it out and burn it to extinction by attending to how or from what (whence) it rises! Instead of doing so,

What are you? Let your heart tell you, not the thought (mind). Are you an individual identity or Life?

The twentieth-century Indian meditation master Sri Nisargadatta encourages us to wholeheartedly enter this path of freedom: “…all I plead with you is this: make love of your self perfect.”
