In my lifetime, the changes in the world have been incredible. When I was a kid, we had a rotary phone... and you had to dial it. And you actually would hate people with zeroes in their numbers ;)
In the end, most of these users would likely migrate back to either free ad-supported services or to subscription services that only make you think about payments once in a while.
When everything is measured in terms of engagement, content will be optimized for addictiveness. Not entertainment or artistic merit. Not intellectual substance or creativity. Pure, plain addictiveness.
