There is a trope in romance that when you meet the person you are supposed to be with, you can talk about anything. You can apparently inverse that too: if you talk about anything that pops into your mind, you can tell if you're supposed to be with the person by judging their reaction.

I remind people that at no point did this feel reckless or brave, but just the obvious thing to do. At some point, you have to act, and accept that whatever comes next will be shaped by the acting itself. There are moments when thinking becomes a kind of superstition, a way of mistaking caution for wisdom
