For guidance, I turned to a poem called “Dark Night of the Soul” by a sixteenth-century mystic, St. John of the Cross.
What I found was that it was the prayers and practices of the church that allowed me to hold to—or rather to be held by—God when little else seemed sturdy, to hold to the Christian story even when I found no satisfying answers.
the Passion asks us to find Jesus in the midst of loneliness, heartache, pain, and exhaustion as they occur in our own lives. We are called to seek God in all these very human things, these broken places and vacant rooms where we think God is not present.
