We remember our own lives, Schopenhauer wrote somewhere, a little better than a novel we once read. That’s about right: a little, no more.

after awakening there is still a human being with a human mind that is trying to make sense of things. The mind is even trying to make sense of awakening itself. Since for most people there’s not a total disappearance of the ego, the mind continues to try to make sense of the insights of awakening.

It is simply the expression of the universal discovery that a man does not really begin to be alive until he has lost himself, until he has released the anxious grasp which he normally holds upon his life, his property, his reputation and position.
