To do pūjā, japa, dhyāna, or any form of yōga, there must be an ‘I’ to do it. So, since they can be performed only as long as that ‘I’ is there, they cannot get rid of that ‘I’. In order to get rid of that ‘I’, or ego, we need to investigate it, and that is why awareness-investigation is the principal means.
