Be no wiser than is necessary, but be wise in moderation. Letter of Paul to the Romans, 12

You Americans study your God. We Africans worship ours. You get smarter. We get changed. And then we change the world around us.”

Our fathers taught, “Your actions speak so loudly I can’t hear what you say.” Today’s young people tell us, “Don’t talk the talk if you don’t walk the walk.” Each maxim merely reflects a higher wisdom that urges Christian leaders to “conduct [themselves] in a manner worthy of the gospel” (Phil. 1:27).

In Peter’s words to his fellow elders he reminded them that they were to shepherd the flock, “nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:3).

Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness! (Matthew 25:21)

That is the role of wise people in our lives—to serve as model and inspiration. To bounce our ideas off and test our presumptions.
