It’s a lot of work to get users on your article. Statistically, the first thing that happens is that the user will close the tab without reading. Only a fraction will read your content for free — consider what an effort it takes to also be paid for it! The original sin of the web, indeed.

the best scientific minds are stuck in academia, the best operators are stuck in large consulting firms (like McKinsey) and the best engineers are stuck at FAANG companies... One of the reasons they do this is because they don’t know what to do next.
It would be a lot more useful to measure how well the economy and its various sectors catalyze emergence of human well-being. This is not extremely easy to measure but it can be done in a way that's far less fudgy than current standard attempts to measure economic productivity.
In other words, what happens when the fanbase is able to give the artist an advance to do their work and get exposed the financial upside of the project?
To be a platform rather than just a tool, Substack needs to answer the following question: as another new creator joins the Substack, how does it become better for all the other creators as well?
