The anterior insula (the region that integrates sensory information into conscious awareness) also becomes more active. The insula determines what sensations make it into the “foreground” of your experience. When it upregulates, more raw sensory data reaches consciousness. You’re not imagining more detail, you’re actually perceiving more of it. More details noticed. More textures felt. More sounds distinguished. A lot of this magic is physiological.
