the “having a boyfriend is embarrassing” discourse falls flat because it’s emblematic of a chronically avoidant society where emotion is either intellectualized or ridiculed, never felt; where participation has to be ironic to be valid. we’re honestly not far off from arguing whether having friends and going out is embarrassing too
