If you find yourself persisting in bossing, critiquing, and reprimanding yourself, try to do what a participant in a workshop once suggested: Create the image of putting all your self-criticisms, kicking and screaming, on a raft and floating them gently downstream.

strings, and voice. Most versions of Pachelbel’s Canon fill this bill. So does the adagietto from Mahler’s Fifth Symphony or the Barber Adagio for Strings. Mike Rowland’s Fairy Ring is a lovely popular piece that works well. These are just suggestions. Don’t let them preclude your own preferences.
