I want community – but am I prepared to put the work in?

Everyone wants to attend parties, but no one wants to throw them. We just expect them to appear when we need them, like fire trucks. My point is that we are obligated to create the social world we want. Intimacy, togetherness-the opposite of the crushing loneliness so many people seem to feel-are what parties alchemize.
As I get older, I am more and more concerned about nurturing a community around me, and happy to invest my time and energy into it – whether that’s my friends, family, neighbourhood or further afield. Even that is a selfish unselfish act in a sense. Doesn’t everyone yearn deep down for a sense of belonging?
