Habit: Initially, you might simply grab a cup of coffee first thing in the morning without much thought. You do it automatically because it's become ingrained in your daily life.
Routine: As you become more intentional about your coffee consumption, it might evolve into a routine. You might start to:
Set your coffee maker the night before
Use a specific mug
Drink your coffee at a particular time or place in your home
Perhaps add some light stretching or reading while you drink
This routine requires more conscious effort and planning than the initial habit.
Ritual: Eventually, your morning coffee could become a full-fledged ritual. This might involve:
Carefully selecting and grinding specific coffee beans
Using a pour-over or other specialized brewing method
Sitting in a dedicated space for your coffee time
Incorporating meditation or journaling while you drink
Perhaps even sharing this time with a partner or family member in a meaningful way
Everything takes longer than you think.
The problem isn’t that you’re not working fast enough--the problem is your expectations were never realistic to begin with.
Why does this matter? Because every day, we have to estimate how long things will take. Tasks, errands, projects, etc.
