I sought transcendence in a romantic vision of place, but what could be more sublime than the expanses and intricacies of time?
In Charles Fourier’s analysis of commerce, “Merchants were like a horde of monks who produced nothing, consumed a great deal, and removed large numbers of men from productive occupations” (Beecher and Bienvenu, “Introduction,” 24)
He means to be scathingly ironic, but the comparison of merchants to monks is revealing, for who else but advertisers and influencers carries on monastic religion’s ancient task of integrating meaning and utility, pleasure and labor, spirit/theory and body/practice.
How we divide the relatable: interest, taste, and identity versus care, calling, and place.
“What we think time is, how we think it is shaped, affects how we are able to move through it.” Jenny Odell, Saving Time (audiobook, 10:54:30)
