In Charles Fourier’s analysis of commerce, “Merchants were like a horde of monks who produced nothing, consumed a great deal, and removed large numbers of men from productive occupations” (Beecher and Bienvenu, “Introduction,” 24)
He means to be scathingly ironic, but the comparison of merchants to monks is revealing, for who else but advertisers and influencers carries on monastic religion’s ancient task of integrating meaning and utility, pleasure and labor, spirit/theory and body/practice.
