I disagree. Yes, I know students and professors of literature will be disappointed that the movie isn't about the pleasure of actually engaging critically with a text - something much more challenging than simply experiencing pleasure while reading the text, an act that doesn't require you to think for yourself. It's that The Dead Poet's Society is terribly shallow, and the way the young men "find themselves" is shallow as well. The point shouldn't be to fall in love with yourself, which is shallow navel-gazing that leads nowhere, but to be challenged to engage with the world in a real and creative way, to be excellent, to think well, and to gain real insight. That is what artists should be doing. There is no way to be authentic without the ability to think for yourself, and the shallow platitudes offered by the movie do not help anyone to find their authentic selves or to engage with art or literature in a real way.

Its shallowness reminds me of the "Eat, Pray, Love" approach to spirituality.
