The Song of Creation in Earthsea speaks of a time when Dragon and Man were one race, one kind of being. But eventually they separate into Dragon and Man. Dragon-people were more in love with flight and being wild, seeking ultimate freedom. The Others cared more about gathering wealth/treasure, learning knowledge. The Others built strongholds and houses to protect their treasures, wanting to pass it on to their children.
