ethnos (usually translated as “nation”) is used in the New Testament to capture the idea of people who make up different groups based on a common history, language, or geographic region.

“Ethnic distinctions are general characteristics that include a person’s nation of origin, language, lineage, customs, and outward features, such as skin color,”

Anthropologists use the term ‘ethnogenesis’ for the process by which disparate groups coalesce around a novel group identity, often retrospectively given divine or mythic origins.

Ethnographers strive to understand and separate the emic perspective (pronounced ee-mik) from the etic perspective (pronounced eh-tik).

Indigenous peoples, as the term is used here, refers to peoples or nations who take their tribal identities as members of the human species from the landscapes and seascapes that gave them their unique tribal cultures.
