Without the gospel, our self-image is based on living up to some standards — either our own or someone else’s imposed on us.

If a church is small because its life is being choked out by poor preaching and leadership, that’s a bad kind of small. If it’s small because there’s no sense of mission and no evangelism and no compelling vision of what God can do or if it’s small because the leaders are lazy and comfortable with the status quo, that’s the wrong kind of small.
