That is, if the mind has developed the conviction that God is the reality that shines within itself as ‘I’, it willingly investigates and subsides within itself, instead of rising as a separate ego and seeking other objects.

By refining awareness of inner experience, yoga is both a method and its outcome, as described in the commentary accompanying Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra (3.6): Yoga is to be known by yoga, and yoga itself leads to yoga. He who remains steadfast in yoga always delights in it.

Admitting the mistaken perception of ordinary people, ‘I am this body; I have a separate existence’, as the base, the scriptures teach the four yōgas, namely karma yōga, bhakti yōga, rāja yōga and jñāna yōga:

On the path of love, get so dissolved that only the other becomes real and you become a shadow and by and by you completely disappear. On the path of love, God remains, you disappear; on the path of meditation, God disappears, you appear. But the total and the ultimate result is the same. A great synthesis happens.
