The account God will ask of us is one of obedience, not performance.

Knowing and acting on the truth is what we call the “big deal” at Bridgewater.

I see this more often when working with people who clearly have the gift of pastoring or shepherding, but won’t acknowledge it, often because they don’t have the “right” title or official position.

I also believe that for the sake of discipleship it is crucial to immerse oneself in a community of practice that exhibits the reformative potential we’ve been describing. Your heart is at stake.

Economies, knowledge, and required skills change, but the principles of leading with love are timeless and will always benefit any organization.

Arthur F. Miller Jr. writes: “Understand that you are God’s idea. You will be held accountable for using what he gave you to work with.”4

These facts lead to a radical observation. If it is true that all human beings are constantly trying to make sense out of life, then all of life is counseling or personal ministry. Counseling is the stuff of human life! We are always interpreting and always sharing our interpretations with one another. This “sharing” ultimately amounts to advice or

groups can provide the loving accountability that we all need. Ongoing change is central to becoming whole, and change is always hard. We all need people who can speak into our lives, lovingly correcting us when we are wrong and spurring us on to love and good deeds
