With very few exceptions, video killed the American revival house. If you want to see a Boris Karloff movie, you have to rent it and watch it on a television set. In Paris it costs as much to rent a movie as it does to go to the theater. French people enjoy going out and watching their movies on a big screen. On any given week one has at least 250

As Andre Bazin once said, all films are created equal. Whether they play at the Biograph (as will Violette) or the Chicago (as will Halloween), we owe them the same consideration, the same right to succeed or fail on their own terms.

I’m not a compulsive film-goer, and compared to most directors am hardly what you would call cinematically literate. I can’t imagine my work would be any better or worse if I crawled into a darkened room and spent days watching other people’s efforts.
