Notation, like its conceptual cousin language, is difficult to define precisely because it covers such a wide range of ideas. But as a starting point, let’s constrain notation to be some arrangement of symbols or images that we use to record and communicate ideas, and the way we interact with those symbols in our thinking process.

A feel­ing is an idea that hasn’t been artic­u­lated yet, whereas an idea is more like the receipt that comes out of the cash reg­is­ter of the thinking process.

For modern, professional notetaking, a note is a “knowledge building block”—a discrete unit of information interpreted through your unique perspective and stored outside your head.
