This beautiful study belongs to a small group of works John Constable painted of the downs above Brighton, to where, in May 1824, he had temporarily moved his family for the benefit of his wife Maria's health. The power and immensity of nature is emphased by the tiny shepherd and his flock at the foot of the composition.

The Hudson River School painters were heavily influenced by and borrowed liberally from the English Romantic painter Joseph Mallord William Turner’s imagery of foreboding seas, ominous clouds, and vast landscapes. It is hard to overstate the impact Turner had on the art world in the mid- to late 1800s.
