This beautiful study belongs to a small group of works John Constable painted of the downs above Brighton, to where, in May 1824, he had temporarily moved his family for the benefit of his wife Maria's health. The power and immensity of nature is emphased by the tiny shepherd and his flock at the foot of the composition.

The British painter #JohnBrett based this artwork on detailed notes on colour and changes in the weather. He made these as he sailed round the south-west coast of England in the summer of 1870. However, the precise location of this view has not been confirmed so far.
