proclaiming the message of “awareness,” seeing the light we are to ourselves and to others, recognizing we are better than we know.

Who decides what will finally make its way to your conscious mind from all the material that is pouring in from the world? Three decisive filters: first your attachments, second your beliefs and third your fears.

For even when awareness uncovers unpleasant things in you, it always brings liberation and joy. Then you will know that the unaware life is not worth living, it is too full of darkness and pain.

Remember that essential spiritual question: Who am I following in life, authenticity or egocentricity? Here is what I’m learning. The one who wants to know the answer to that sort of question is in the latter club. That which is present to what is, is in the former.

The moment you are aware of your holiness it goes sour and becomes self-righteousness. A good deed is never so good as when you have no consciousness that it is good—you are so much in love with the action that you are quite unself-conscious about your goodness and virtue.

Now take a look at yourself reacting negatively and ask yourself the following question: “Am I in charge of this situation or is this situation in charge of me?” That is the first revelation. With it comes the second: The way to be in charge of this situation is to be in charge of yourself, which you are not.

So, how long will it take to give it to you? I’ll be honest with you: I don’t think it would take more than two minutes. Grasping it might take you twenty years, fifteen years, ten years, fifty-two weeks, one week, one day, ten minutes—who knows. You could read one chapter in this book and get it.
