Great thread with specific tips on getting into classical music. For me it was Glenn Gould's "Goldberg Variations" that started it, & the Robert Greenberg lectures helped me understand what I was listening to.

Since he was an opera fan there were, as you might expect, some recordings by Verdi and Puccini. But compared to the substantial lineup of German opera he didn’t seem as enthusiastic about these.
