Intra-African trade is negligible. Imports from outside the region constitute a large share of what is consumed. Exports are largely primary commodities, such as oil and minerals. Infrastructure is inadequate; in sub-Saharan Africa, only Nigeria and South Africa rank among the top one hundred connected countries globally.
