My dad contracted polio when he was eleven.
During his hospital stay, the doctors took him to a room with a long ramp and two railings on either side.
Though just a boy, he knew what that ramp meant. If a polio survivor couldn’t walk, the doctors would brace the leg. Once braced, muscles weakened, and walking would never be possible.
