As I begin to structure my notes I also have to preserve the utility of the free writing which often yields insights.
The difficult thing here is to handle the exchange between the analytics part of the brain that seeks to organize every detail, and the creative side of the brain that is willing to get lost in flow. Both extremes have disadvantages. The first being, of course, that they smother each other. Beyond that, the analytical will lead to loops of endless busy work for aesthetic purposes, while the creative will lead to piles and piles of raw output which overload utility. Think of the perfectly styled spreadsheet with nothing in it, and a room piled to the ceiling with sheets of paper covered in sloppily written notes. Nothing can be done with either of these. You must find a way to exist between them.
This becomes particularly difficult in an outline based app like Tana. The secret that I find is to capture freely and re-structure later. In other words just fill the page with ideas as comes out of you. Then tag them to be processed later. This is useful because you can take advantage of moods (or modes). When you are feeling creative, you have a place to capture freely without fear of losing anything. And when you are feeling analytical, you can then pull up the tag and begin to work through the mess by structure it into something useful and easy to scan through in the future.
