curiousity / curation / culture all swim in the same waters of “care” - we create culture by caring, showing care, practicing care
Something about the host as being “lead channeler” of people’s curiosity - helping them figure out what is and isn’t worth paying attention to, how we can better spend our time and energy?
In a world of abundance, the role of the curator is becoming more important than ever. What should we be paying attention to, when everything around is crying out for our attention?
Gathering—the conscious bringing together of people for a reason—shapes the way we think, feel, and make sense of our world.
Even outside of work, you are proposing to consume people’s most precious resource: time. Making the effort to consider how you want your guests, and yourself, to be altered by the experience is what you owe people as a good steward of that resource.
“a good steward of that resource [time]”
As with the operas Muyanga listens to, you, too, have hopefully created a temporary alternative world in your gathering, and it is your job to help your guests close that world, decide what of the experience they want to carry with them, and reenter all that from which they came.
temporary alternative world
An essential step along the path of gathering better is making peace with the necessity and virtue of using your power. If you are going to gather, gather. If you are going to host, host. If you are going to create a kingdom for an hour or a day, rule it—and rule it with generosity.
The ultimate privilege, for me. A house I have for myself and can open up for others. A room for them to stay in. The fight was never for a room of my own. I always had that in my head, no matter what. I was always going to write. It was the fight for a room for someone else. To open up my home—and myself—to others.
