The Sin-Eater
open.spotify.comtradition in the 15th-18th century in Great Britain, Scotland and Wales
The sin eater is a person (mostly someone sort of poor, who needs the money) that was hired at a funeral to consume a ritual meal (consisting of bread, salt and sometimes beer or milk) on order to take on the dead person’s sins, so they could go to heaven
The sin eater was feared, avoided and excluded from the community (people weren’t allowed to look them in the eyes during the ceremony for example)
