Rosa tells me of a word in Russian, быт, pronounced bytʹ. The Internet translates it as “everyday life”, but it really means something more melancholy, the drudgey underbelly of existence. It means the mundane in opposition to the spiritual; the things that we actually spend most of our time doing; washing up, sweeping dried bits of food and fluff

I aspire to Isak Dinesen’s way: work a little every day, without hope and without despair. What a way to live! To make! To be!
