The ‘free line’ was a thread, a thin rope thrown to me from the depths of the living world. It appeared very early on, when I was living in a farmhouse in Italy; a doodle that came from nowhere. It held everything, though I didn’t know it at the time.

youtube.comMany people fear mistakes and errors, leading to procrastination and perfectionism among other things. Hank Green’s story of errors on top of errors is worth bearing in mind. Green is prolific in presenting, writing, creating, and so on. When mistakes happen, it’s usually okay even when it’s not okay, and there can still be a great deal of success possible despite getting things wrong.
It turned out that it wasn’t about ‘knowing what to do’2, but something else, something intrinsically unnameable, fundamentally untrackable. I knew that I hadn’t made the shift happen, other than by showing up, day after day, and trying to open to the whole weird mess of feeling and desire, experience, instinct and memory.
How long does an idea take to birth?
Creativity just happens, even when meticulously planned and executed. Letting go of the process is sometimes the best way to control the situation.
