You Are Always the Other Person
Saved by Stuart Evans
Perhaps to really know another person, you have to have a glimmer of how they experience the world. To really know someone, you have to know how they know you.
We can very easily generalize by saying that if you are the one who is looking at something, then that something is not you. So right away, in one fell swoop, you know what you’re not: you’re not the outside world. You’re the one who is inside looking out at that world.
“A man is always a teller of stories. He lives surrounded by his stories and the stories of others, he sees everything that happens to him through them; and tries to live his life as if he were recounting them.”
Perhaps to really know another person, you have to have a glimmer of how they experience the world. To really know someone, you have to know how they know you.
