A note on my creative practice: the act of creation precedes meaning. sometimes by months or years . I don’t usually show up to set with a fully formed concept, or with the symbolism mapped out. The reality of creating anything, for me, is that I’m engaging in the practice to explore - to externalize a feeling, or an amalgamation of feelings. I often don’t know what I’m making before I make it, or why. Reflection is a cherished part of my practice. To look at something I’ve made and piece it all together - “is this about power?” “who is the third party animator?” “what is the gravity towards red?” “does this mirror a memory? an emotion?” “what does it evoke in me now?” This process is filtered through a framework of style: why is something like or not like me? what colors make up my specific palette and why? Are there hallmarks of my style that I can alchemize a methodology, a chemistry, or an application into? What is pleasant to my eye? What is pleasurable for me to make, repeat, and refine? - If talking though process and meaning is of interest to you - @ImaniGivertz and I are hosting a workshop April 6-7 in New York where we’ll be diving into play, collaboration, elements of style, creating intuitively, and more! Space is limited & early bird pricing is available til 3/1, more information at the link in bio ✨
