I used to start with researching an idea before I started, but now I have a rule with myself that I can’t do that until there’s a shitty first draft to work with.

I've always loved Stephen King’s formula of 2nd draft = 1st draft - 10%.

Works for literally works for whatever you are writing. I've used it for emails, novels, scripts, print ads and everything in between.
