A moment later, the cold ran up her arms, and caught her breath, and beneath her hands a heartbeat fluttered, as Victor Vale opened his eyes, and smiled.

“I watch you, and it’s like watching two people.”

“You should be careful, playing with guns,” she said. “Sooner or later you’re going to get shot.” Mitch cocked the gun. “The novelty wore off when your boyfriend played target practice with my chest.”

Specifically, safe had become Victor.

“I like to think there’s a special place in hell for girls who feed their little sisters to wolves.”

He’d never been one for God, never had Eli’s zeal, never needed signs, but if there were such things, if there was Fate, or some higher power, maybe it had an issue with Eli’s methods, too.

Victor wanted to find Eli, and Eli wanted to find Victor, and one way or another, they would succeed. She looked at Victor’s profile one last time, and tried to picture the man who had once been Eli’s friend, who had brought him back, made him what he was, saved her sister … and for a moment, as she finished dialing Eli’s number, she almost wished

“I see you’re still alive then. Good choice.”

“Well,” said Victor, “how hard can it be, right? You’ve done it once. But being afraid and being unwilling are different things. I don’t think you want to die.”
