In John 5:44, Jesus essentially says, “It’s impossible to genuinely trust Christ when you’re seeking to please people.” And when my eyes scanned Luke 16:15, a spiritual dagger went through my heart as I read “that which is highly esteemed among men is detestable in the sight of God.”

I have a love/hate relationship with Jesus’s disciples. I love ’em because they’re just like me. I hate ’em because they’re just like me. All along they’re wanting the Romans physically overthrown and Jesus on a literal throne in Jerusalem, and all along Jesus is consistently telling them the kingdom of God isn’t like that.
