The Hebrew word for heart combines the words we use for heart and mind; it’s where desire and will overlap, and it’s what drives our actions.
The word Jeshurun that appears three times in this song is a reference to the Israelites. It means “upright ones,” and it’s used ironically here, since they aren’t upright.
Jacob is called Israel; it’s the first time we see this word in Scripture. The name eventually refers not only to this one man, but to his descendants too.
God’s names reveal His character and actions. And where He provided is noteworthy too. It was “on the mount of the LORD.” Most people believe this mountain is where Solomon builds the temple and that it’s also on this short stretch of mountains that Jesus is crucified. “On the mount of the LORD it shall be provided” (22:14). And it was.
This psalm expresses two conflicting ideas, but both feelings can sit in the human heart simultaneously—it’s just helpful to know which feeling is true.
But Israel’s leaders say they have to keep their covenant and suffer the consequences of this sinful decision.
