Some instructors will create weekly screencasts instead of sending out a weekly email. This has the particular advantage of being visual. The difficult part is to keeping them brief (under five minutes). If you take this approach, I recommend that you still send out the email; include the link to your screencast and a short message.
Someone who wants to learn knows that he needs both information and critical response to its use from somebody else. Information can be stored in things and in persons.
