In 1862, archaeologists working in Pompeii excavated a large inn. They found on an atrium wall a charcoal graffto that seemed to use the word Christianos (“Christians”). Pompeii was buried in ash following the 79 CE eruption of nearby Mount Vesuvius, thus providing a

snapshot of a Roman city. Scholars have often searched for physical evidence indicating whether Christianity had a presence in the city; however, most arguments are unconvincing, except for this graffto. When it was uncovered, archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli made this line drawing. However, the inscription started to fade after a few days of exposu
