Imagination is so important because it helps us create longing, and if we can get that right, other things then follow.
Any national approach to rebuilding the imagination must take access to nature seriously, and must also recognise the power of bringing more nature to where people live, to a ‘rewilding’ of our towns, cities and neighbourhoods.
Perhaps we should instead be asking what the world would look like if a healthy imagination were, in our everyday, considered indispensable to a healthy life?
It would evaluate policy proposals from elsewhere in the government through a lens of whether they make the country more imaginative, or less.
