Gen Z is unique, with their pessimism contrasting with Millennials’ optimism and their slow and sheltered upbringings so different from that of Gen X’ers. However, Gen Z shows early signs of having something in common with Boomers: the unapologetic desire to change a system they believe isn’t working anymore.
Or perhaps they never will be, if Millennials jump the line. Matthew Hennessey sees Gen X as the last bastion of moderation against a Millennial wave set to take over just as Boomers are ceding the stage.
Gen Z is the most racially and ethnically diverse generation of American adults to date. Not only do more identify as Black, Hispanic, or Asian, but there are more multiracial Gen Z’ers than in any previous generation.
In truth, although older people – defined in this book as aged 65 and over (though whether 65 is really that old any more is another matter) – are the biggest group of people who use council-funded social care, the number has been falling in recent years, despite our ageing population.
