The best tool for the job is the one you are most comfortable using.
Small Silicone or Plastic Spatula I use this to stir a starter when refreshing it and for any other spreading task in the kitchen. I like one that has a pointy end that tapers to a rounder side so I can scrape the straight sides of a jar or the round sides of a bowl with equal effectiveness.
