For the Army

Napoleon befriend the Regiment who watch over Longwood House. Napoleon have some small talks with them using Las Cases (the guy who wrote the Memorial) as a translator, I know he gets pretty well with the scottish troops to whom he flattered the ego, spoke of the Auld Alliance, Celtic History and their reputation of great warrior. Hudson Lowe was forced to switch the guard, fearing that Napoleon will escape with the complicity of the regiment.

He didn't get along well with the governor Lowe but he has a good relationship with the first head of the Navy of Saint-Helena, Sir Pulteney Malcolm (who will have a pretty honorable career in the Royal Navy). Lowe will forced him to move from Saint-Helena in 1817.

Napoleon received around 500 hundread visitor at Longwood House, their treatment vary given their position. Lower class visitors were seen in group, generaly outside Longwood while VIP visitor get to be in the personal quarters of Napoleon. Napoleon give a good face to those visitors, especialy those who could potentialy help him getting out of the island.

He did befriend the Balcombe family (the father control the importation trade on the island) who lodge him at the Briars House before he moved to Longwood. The family was Whigs tradition and therefore were more inclined to Napoleon, he notably develop a friendship with the daughter, Betsy Balcombe who wrote memoirs about it. they left the island in 1818 , partly because the father wanted to escape his debts, partly because the father help to pass Napoleon's illegal letter to UK (to favour a whigs takeover against the tories).

He also befriend one of the Balcombe slave, Toby, that he tried to bought his freedom but Lowe refused, he still give him a lot of money. There's also the doctor Barry O'Meara, who become a close confident of Napoleon (also kicked by lowe in 1818).

For the workers, Napoleon has still a court at Saint-Helena of around 50 people comming from his Imperial Court (groom, butler, servants, cook) but he did get a bunch of chinese workers (who replace the slaves in Saint-Helena) who will help him gardening. Napoleon were thankful to them since they catch most of the rats (which Saint-Helena was infested) and did give them money on is deathbed.

With his close entourage (especialy Generals Gourgaud, Bertrand and Montholon, ), Napoleon could be petty having no problem to pit them against each other (divide and rule baby) and choose favorite first Las Cases and then Montholon. Gourgaud will become gradualy insane from his jealousy toward the Montholon like spying Napoleon's window when he was with the countess of Montholon (since Montholon was perfectly fine to lend his wife to the Emeperor).

He did appreciate the devotion of some of his entourage like Noverraz (his swiss bodyguard), Marchand (his valet) or Mameluk Ali (librarian, bodyguard).

From his activity it was: dictate his memoirs, play chess, riding horse, gardening, rarely hunting. He did some visits to some local family but generaly didn't mix with the elite of Jameston simply because he hate Hudson Lowe.

Napoleon gradualy isolate itself from 1819-1821, starting to feel weaker.
