Both were hardworking providers, even if my mother often took her responsibilities to perfectionist extremes that contrasted awkwardly with my father’s nonchalance.
Put simply, if everyone is busy making sure that they get to “be all they can be,” then who will clean the house, cook the dinners, diaper the babies, and nurse the infirm, not to mention labor in the factories, sweep the streets, drive the taxis, and load the sanitation trucks?
What if the individual professional seeks to live up to the external, organizationally imposed criteria of what constitutes success and achievement, but is unable to do so?
No matter how we approach working parenthood, we will feel tension around and between these roles.
