If you realize your money is not doing what you want, go back to Rule One. Or even better, wipe out your whole budget and start over. Forget every obligation and goal, so it’s just you and your checking account balance again.
Forget about the things you can’t do with your money (I can’t afford that trip), or the things you have to do with your money (I have to pay off my student loans).
But in our daily lives, when we do things over and over and over, maybe there are categories for which we should increase the pain of paying. Buying lunch, grabbing trashy magazines at the supermarket checkout, getting a pricey smoothie after working out—these are things we can reconsider without ruining a priceless moment.
