But what if the meaning of AI is not to be found in the way it competes with, supersedes or supplants us? What if, like the emergence of network theory, its purpose is to open our eyes and minds to the reality of intelligence as something doable in all kinds of fantastic ways, many of them beyond our own rational understanding?

And none of these species of AI – not one – will think like a human. All of them produce alien intelligences. Even as they approach consciousness, they will be alien, almost as if they are artificial alien beings.
Artificial Intelligences, So Far
could just as well stand for “alien intelligence.” We have no certainty we’ll contact extraterrestrial beings from one of the billion earthlike planets in the sky in the next 200 years, but we have almost 100 percent certainty that we’ll manufacture an alien intelligence by then.
