Feminism was never meant to be a weapon wielded by the state. It was meant to dismantle the very structures that decide which women matter and which ones can be sacrificed.

Equality. That’s what feminism should be about.

No one should be excluded, no one should be overly protected. Feminism should never be used to justify racism, moral panic and reinforce state violence. It should promote unity. It should promote inclusion.

When feminism is twisted to justify borders, bans, surveillance, or moral panic, it stops protecting women and starts policing them. It doesn’t prevent harm. It redistributes it, pushing the risk further down the social hierarchy while congratulating itself for doing something.

Femonationalism; a word that describes the hijacking of feminist language to justify nationalist, racist, and authoritarian projects.

Politicians and commentators who have spent decades undermining women’s rights suddenly discover a deep concern for women only when that fear and concern can be blamed on migrants.

Not because chivalry has risen from the dead. But because fear is useful, and the feminist fight carries cultural weight.
